Own Your Sh*t

“You’re kinda being a dick,” my friend said to me last week.

Well, she didn’t use those exact words. She was much kinder. But that was the theme: Amanda, stop being a dick.

Huh. I didn’t even realize I was being a dick, to be honest. I mean, I could see her point. I have had my head up my butt over the last couple years, in that I’m so focused on the split from my ex and moving through that and then road trip and then book. Lots of Amanda-focus. Which is fine. I needed to do all of that.

But it’s time for me to own my shit - that I’ve kinda been selfish in my friendships - and say sorry. And then move on.

So I did. I apologized to my friend: “I’m really sorry. I didn’t realize my behavior was making you feel bad, so I’m glad you told me. I will do better moving forward, because this relationship is important to me. And I’ll be sure to let you know if you’re being a dick too. Yay for open communication!” (I actually said all of that.)

“Whoa. Well you took that way better than I thought you would,” my friend said.

“That’s fair. But you know what? I think I’ve come a long way in owning my shit over the last few years. So it’s totally cool,” I replied with a shrug. She nodded. Then we proceeded to hang out and laugh and be goofy together.

It really wasn’t a big deal. I apologized. I’m not going to beat myself up for it. And I’m just choosing to do better, in order to have a better relationship with my friend. Because it’s important to me.

A couple years ago? I would have taken it very personally, and there would have been all sorts of drama. Now? Hell no. I'm not living my life that way anymore.

This is what I’m talking about when I created the ‘Own your shit’ saying on our new GG sweaters. Awareness. No projection onto other people. Owning it, and then moving forward.

Now over to you...what are your thoughts on ‘owning your shit?’ What does this mean to you? I’m super intrigued, so I’d be thrilled if you left a comment below! We've had TONS of amazing comments on our Giveaway posts on this topic over on Instagram and Facebook, so check those out too!

Cheers to YOU,
