Kindness is contagious. For real.
I couldn't help it. I pulled up to the drive-through window, to get my coffee. It was -20oC and I was EXCITED about that coffee. I tried to coordinate braking/getting my wallet out/being friendly, but it was a little tough - I was frazzled.
I finally looked up, and the young man at the window said: 'No charge. The person in front of you paid for your coffee.'
What?! Okay, what? That is AWESOME. Like squishy heart/fun surprise/puppies awesome. It pulled me into the present moment, and I forgot about how frazzled I was. I was simply...grateful.
And then I couldn't help it. I simply had to pay for the person behind me. I wanted to extend that kindness, so someone else could experience that small delight! (They didn't even know what was coming! Eeee!)
I drove away, feeling surprisingly good. And it wasn't just from the taste of that coffee. I cranked up my music and rocked out on my drive home.
(Me and my Mom, being silly. Like my shirt says: kindness is contagious. The shirt (and science) doesn't lie.)
As I've dug into kindness over the past year, I've found that there is legit science behind it. It's not some woo-woo BS that an overly optimistic/positive/always-look-at-the-bright-side 34-year-old woman (me) talks about, for the hell of it.
According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, 'the positive effects of kindness are experienced in the brain of everyone who witnessed the act, improving their mood and making them significantly more likely to "pay it forward." This means one good deed in a crowded area can create a domino effect and improve the day of dozens of people.'
Yep. Kindness is contagious. For real.
Why am I focused on this right now? Well, February 11-17 is Random Acts of Kindness Week. And we are SO excited. Like pee-your-pants-no-matter-your-age excited.
We will be doing daily acts of kindness, online and in our community and surrounding areas! We have so many goodies and love to give away! (free shirts and decals!)
We will also be sharing tips and tricks for YOU, so it's easy for you to do your own acts of kindness. Heck, you might even be able to cheer up your grumpy-pants boss (well, that might be a stretch, but it could happen).
Please follow us on social media (Facebook and Instagram) if you aren't already, and let others know about us as well! The more people that are aware and able to do random acts of kindness, the better. Kindness is a cascade of goodness, and the beauty part? It's super simple.
Thank you for joining this fun train! (yep, fun train. I just made that up.)
P.S. If you sign up for our email newsletter, you will get EXTRA bits of kindness. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and hit 'newsletter signup.' Is this a bribe? Absolutely. But it's like a win-win bribe, with no strings attached. You can unsubscribe at any time. And we're pretty sure you'll like the goodness we're sending next week. Lots of love to you!
